Our Story

Our Story: The Essence of JOYA Hotel Shanghai Gubei
In the heart of Shanghai’s cosmopolitan Changning District, where the pulse of global commerce meets the quiet grace of traditional Chinese living, a vision took shape. Born in 2020 from a deep respect for travel as a transformative experience, JOYA Hotel Shanghai Gubei emerged not merely as a place to stay, but as a sanctuary designed to restore, inspire, and connect. Our story is one of intentional harmony—where modern elegance dances with Eastern serenity, and every detail is crafted to help you journey better, rest deeper, and discover more.

The Meaning Behind “JOYA”

The name JOYA carries a dual resonance that defines our ethos. In Spanish, joya means “jewel”—a precious, enduring treasure. In the context of our Chinese home, it evokes the concept of jiā (家), meaning “home,” and (雅), signifying “elegance” and “refinement.” Together, they represent our promise: to offer every guest a jewel-like experience of refined hospitality that feels authentically like home. This philosophy guides everything we do, from the curvature of a handrail to the warmth of a greeting.

A Location Rooted in Community and Connectivity

We chose Gubei not by accident, but by intention. As one of Shanghai’s most internationally vibrant neighborhoods, Gubei has long been a crossroads of cultures—a place where tree-lined avenues whisper with history, while innovative dining, art spaces, and boutiques pulse with contemporary energy. At Building B, No. 188 Hongbaoshi Road, we stand at the gentle intersection of this duality. Just steps from Yili Road Metro Station and a short journey from Hongqiao Transportation Hub, we offer seamless access to Shanghai’s vast possibilities, while providing a tranquil retreat from its intensity. Our story is intertwined with the neighborhood’s: we source ingredients from local artisans, collaborate with nearby cultural institutions, and design experiences that invite guests to explore Gubei’s unique character as an extension of their stay.

Design: Where Minimalism Meets Meaning

Our physical space tells a story of thoughtful curation. Working with acclaimed designers who specialize in cross-cultural aesthetics, we created an environment where clean, contemporary lines are softened by natural materials—warm wood, textured stone, and handcrafted ceramics. Subtle references to Chinese artistry appear throughout: the gentle curve of a lamp echoing a calligraphy brushstroke, the play of light and shadow reminiscent of traditional lattice windows, or the serene palette inspired by Shanghai’s dawn mist.

Each of our 173 guestrooms and suites is conceived as a personal sanctuary. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame views of the neighborhood or interior gardens, flooding spaces with natural light. Premium bedding, smart climate control, and soundproofed walls ensure restorative rest, while curated amenities—from artisanal tea selections to locally inspired welcome gifts—invite moments of mindful pause. This is not just design for beauty’s sake; it is design for well-being, crafted to support both productivity and peace.

Culinary Philosophy: Honoring Flavor, Place, and Craft

At JOYA, food is a language of connection. Our signature restaurant, 玛瑙花园 (Agate Garden), reflects our belief that exceptional dining should honor both tradition and innovation. Here, chefs craft artfully presented regional Chinese cuisine using seasonal, responsibly sourced ingredients—many from trusted partners in Jiangnan and beyond. The menu celebrates the depth of Shanghai’s culinary heritage while embracing global influences, served in a setting inspired by classical Chinese gardens where every meal feels like a quiet celebration.

Beyond the restaurant, our tea room offers a sanctuary for contemplation, featuring rare oolongs, delicate greens, and expertly prepared pu-erh, while the lobby bar crafts cocktails that blend international techniques with local botanicals. Even our 24-hour room service is designed with intention: nourishing, beautifully presented, and available whenever inspiration strikes.

Service: The Heartbeat of JOYA

If design is our body and cuisine our voice, then service is our soul. We believe true hospitality lies not in grand gestures, but in anticipatory care—the quiet moment when a need is met before it is spoken. Our team, fluent in Mandarin and English and trained in the art of empathetic service, is empowered to personalize every interaction. Whether arranging a private car to a business meeting, recommending a hidden-gem alleyway restaurant, or simply remembering a guest’s preference for extra pillows, we strive to make each stay feel uniquely tailored.

This commitment extends to our operational values. As part of the H World hotel group, we uphold rigorous standards of quality, safety, and sustainability. We actively participate in Shanghai’s green initiatives—reducing single-use plastics, optimizing energy efficiency, and supporting local environmental projects—because we believe luxury and responsibility must go hand in hand.
